The Importance of SPACE: Carrie Waller on Learning and Goal Setting
This is part of the end of year advice series. Guests from the show offer suggestions on how to use an hour a day to get better at painting and share some of their own goals (and how they set them) for the year ahead.
Carrie Waller, Ep. 8, is a watercolor artist working in a realistic, detailed style. Her studies in Interior Design and Graphic Design as well as her time spent living in Europe and Asia have influenced her as an artist. Her unique works are bold, vibrant and dramatic.
On an Hour a Day:
I would definitely paint if I only had one hour a day to devote to art.
It is very important that you make it easy on yourself to sit down and paint any time you have a minute or two. Have your paint area set up and ready to go.
“It is very important that you make it easy on yourself to sit down and paint any time you have a minute or two.” - Carrie Waller
I paint in my living room and I fought with the idea that I needed to hide away my space when I wasn’t painting. I now have it set up to look like an artist lives at my house. It is a permanent area in my living room and it has really made me shift to a more professional outlook and reminds me to sit down and paint any time I can.
Setting Art Goals:
I am very goal oriented. I paint more when I have a deadline and I push myself to make each painting the next best painting I have ever painted. I always have a contest in mind while I’m painting and am trying harder to project out a painting schedule so that I am not rushed or can pull fewer all-nighters this year. I have a master list of contest deadlines and like to add a few more entries into my schedule each year.
