About The Podcast
Welcome to the Learn to Paint Podcast. I’m Kelly Anne Powers. Once a month, I’ll be bringing you conversations with artists on the topic of how to learn to paint.
Now, learning to paint is a pretty big topic. Some of the episodes will dive deeply into materials and techniques. Others will explore the mindsets that are useful in keeping you at it. And we’ll be talking about theory- composition and design the visual language that all of these artists now speak fluently.
A little bit about me: I’m a third generation artist. And I’m learning to paint. My grandmother, Jan Kunz, taught watercolor workshops across the country and has written a half dozen books on the subject.
My mother, artist Lynn Powers, started a business with my Dad, Jim, called Creative Catalyst Productions that brought live workshops to video format. Youtube wasn’t around yet. My art education happened in a dark room editing the footage of artists like John Salminen, Carla O’Connor, and Mark Mehaffey teach people, including me- although at the time I didn’t know that, to learn to paint.
In addition to my Creative Catalyst art education, I saw the incredible paintings that came out of my Mother’s and Grandmother’s studios. As I got older, I heard the incredible thinking that went into that work. At one point, when my Grandmother and I were talking about painting, she said the process was, “Think. Think. Paint.” I’ve always loved that.
It’s that thinking that I hope to share with you. How do these artists work? How did they learn to paint? And what advice do they have for the rest of us on that journey?
The goal of this podcast is to help people- you and me - become better painters. To give you the tools and ideas you need to go back into your studio and make stronger work. For that reason, we won’t shy away from jargon or theory. If there’s something you hear and you’re not quite familiar with it yet, check out the show notes. I’ll keep lots of great information there including a vocabulary section.
So welcome to the Learn to Paint podcast. Thank you for being here. I hope you take something from these conversations to help you on your journey as an artist.
Happy painting!
