The Big Possibilities of Working Small: Betty Franks Krause on Learning and Goals

This is part of the end of year advice series. Podcast guests offer suggestions on how to use an hour a day to get better at painting and share some of their own goals (and how they set them) for the year ahead.

Betty Franks Krause (Ep. 10) is an acrylic painter who works in intuitive layers to build up her abstract work. In her work, Krause strives to capture the feeling of fields of flowers and creates work that is bright and bold. She works quickly, building up lower layers of marks and then moving to paint.

On an Hour a Day:

There's so much that can be done in just an hour!

When I'm short on time, I like to work small and work on paper. It makes me feel like I accomplished something and I don't view paper as being precious, so I tend to be more loose and relaxed when creating.

I love creating on 5x7" paper. Bristol paper is my favorite. I use the 9x12 size and cut it down to two 5x7 pieces and then I also have a little leftover to make a few bookmarks.

I like to put down my first couple of layers on the full sheet (9x12) and then cut it up. This way I quickly have starts and it makes it easier to finish them up.

Setting Art Goals:
Setting art goals tends to be a looser approach than setting goals for my art business. However, I love to continue to learn and my favorite way to do that is to attend workshops. I especially love 4-5 day in-person workshops where I'm fully present and engaged with the instructor and fellow artists. There's a wonderful energy in the room that pushes me to try new exercises and techniques that I can apply to my own work. And, what a wonderful way to connect with your tribe!
