You've Got Modern Tools... Use Them!
Ali Kay, Ep. 61, takes full advantage of the many modern tools artists of today have available.
Kay uses digital tools on her iPad as part of her planning process. She also uses one of two methods for her images transfer depending on the size of her final painting.
For smaller paintings, Kay transfers her drawing using transfer paper. She prints it out at the correct size for her surface and then uses transfer paper to bring the important shapes (not every shape, just the important shapes) over to her painting surface.
(You can also use the tile print setting and tape pieces together if you need larger images.)
If she's working larger, Kay uses a projector and projects her reference onto her surface.
Put it to Practice:
Sometimes as an artist you’ll feel pushback to using modern tools. But remember, artists ALWAYS have used the most modern tools at their disposal. (For example, the Impressionists went outside because paint could suddenly travel….and you KNOW there were artists at the time saying, “Real artist don’t work outside with *gasp* tubes.”)
Give yourself permission to use the tools available if they will help you do more of what you love. If you absolutely hate the drawing process, transfer! Use a projector! (You can also grid something out too.) Free hand isn’t the only way to get a drawing onto a paper if you don’t want it to be. You've got great options.
