The Power of SAMEness

There seems to be amazing new art material available to us each and every day.

But even with all the great choices out there for paper, Yong Hong Zhong (Ep.71) mainly sticks to 140 in his brand of choice.

And for good reason.

Here's why: He wants to trust how his paper will react. And all paper reacts differently.

Even if you get the same type of paper- let's say 140 hot press- between brands, there will be differences in how that paper handles itself.

So Zhong sticks to one or two manufacturers so that he can be confident in how that paper behaves. That way if somethin does go sideways, he can be confident it’s not his paper.

Put it to Practice:

Anytime you switch between materials (including the same material but BETWEEN brands), you might be making a bigger change than you bargained for.

It's not just this paper for that other, new paper.

It's all the things you’ll need to relearn just slightly because of how this paper is different.

It’s an exponential change.

So if you find yourself struggling in your medium, it can be really helpful to choose one type of surface. For paper that means the same weight, type AND brand and then stick to it for a while.

That way you'll learn what THAT surface does. And once you do, it will help you learn everything else (paints, brushes, design, etc), faster.
