The Many Possibilities of a Good Series
There are so many great ways to approach a series.
Artist and frequent guest, Debbie Miller shared a new “Re-Imagined” series she’s working on over on Instagram. Miller is taking a favorite still-life composition she’s painted before, and she’s using it as a jumping off point for additional paintings. She wants to see if she can use the color and forms of the original painting in new ways.
Put it to Practice:
Miller writes, “[A] series is one way that I give myself some structure.”
Structure can be helpful if you find yourself overwhelmed by what-to-paint anxiety or if you just need a momentum boost.
A few examples (1) Miller set some clear parameters for her “Re-Imagined” series on color, composition and theme. (2) For the series I’m working on, I’m exploring what it means for me to paint flowers that feel abundant while also scaling up. Or (3) Art Club Member Allison Moir-Smith just finished a plein air landscape series as part of Brian Miller’s Square Foot Show.
There's no wrong way to set up your series. Simply choose some parameters for yourself and get to work.
