How to Collect Color Ideas with Anne Abgott
Color is a lifelong pursuit. And sometimes you get stuck not having any interesting ideas for how to approach color in a given piece. You want to shake up your color but you don’t know HOW.
Ep.6 guest Anne Abgott knows the problem, and she has a solution.
She makes and keeps color notebooks. A place where she collects interesting color combinations she sees out in the world. They might come from the physical world like magazines or from the digital world like Instagram. She absolutely includes paintings or parts of paintings she finds that have striking color.
When she sees something she loves, Abgott clips or prints it out. Then she adds it to her color notebook.
Now she can just flip through and see if anything jumps out at her for the colors she’s using in a painting.
Put it to Practice:
Pull out your scissors and tape, it’s craft time!
Flip through magazines you have around your house or go on a color scavenger hunt through your favorite blogs. When something jumps out at you for having a beautiful color, print it out or cut it out. This can be anything from a candy wrapper, wrapping paper or an ad for socks. You don’t need a reason WHY you like the color. The fact that you do is reason enough.
Then take your color examples and tape or glue them in a book. You are now building a fantastic resource for yourself and your paintings.
