A No Hassle Way to Make Color Harmony with Betty Franks Krause

Betty Franks Krause (Ep.10) is constantly making sure her work has harmony. One of the ways she does this is much easier than you think.

She doesn’t fully clean her brush between colors.

If she grabs some orange on her brush, she won’t fully clean her brush off before she mixes a red mixture. The orange then mixes ever so slightly with that new color and creates a touch of harmony between the colors when she lays them down.

Put it to Practice:

Color harmony happens when colors are related. This is why some artists will create a mother color (Ep.5 Mark Mehaffey) and then mix just a bit to all their other mixes.

In some ways, Krause’s dirty brush creates its own kind of mother color. Moving a small amount of whatever came before onto the colors that come after.

If you use this method and find that you can’t get colors bright enough, just wash off your brush and start again. The nice thing about acrylics is that they dry fast and layer opaquely so you have a second chance to try something.
